The Board of Regents has approved recommendations by its Free Speech Committee, one of which is the inclusion of a free speech statement on all syllabi (see supporting documentation). Senate Vice-Chair Danielle Cowley and Senate DEI Committee member Cara Burnidge have drafted a statement in accordance with the BOR's decision, and it will be presented to the Senate for a vote.

Passed as amended: "The University of Northern Iowa supports and upholds the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech and the principles of academic and artistic freedom. We encourage the free and responsible exchange of diverse ideas on our campus. The University is committed to open inquiry and the spirited and thoughtful debate of such ideas."
