Affirming the procedure of asking for a letter of support for Emeritus Applications
1520
1643
The University Faculty Senate asks that Department Heads, or their designee, write a letter of support for each faculty member seeking Emeritus status, documenting the merit of their application in the areas of teaching, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the institution and their profession. Such a letter should be added to the Emeritus system workflow when the Department Head approves the application for Emeritus status.
Alternately, the letter could be emailed to the University Faculty Senate Chair.

The University Faculty Senate has required an accompanying letter of support for Emeritus applications for several years now. Details from these letters are included in senate discussion during consideration of each Emeritus application and the letter becomes part of the permanent senate record. Retiring faculty appreciate being celebrated in this way and Senators are often inspired by the lifetime achievements of their colleagues. In addition, during the 2019-20 academic year, a committee that examined the Emeritus policy and associated practices, including current faculty and the President of the Emeritus Association, among others, agreed that conferring Emeritus status should entail more than confirmation of time-served if it is to continue to acknowledge a career of meritorious achievement and service at UNI. Thus, some record of a faculty member's career highlights is needed to provide senators justification for awarding Emeritus status.
The attached document with recommendations from the UNI Emeritus Association (UNIEA) was submitted by Judy Harrington, Professor Emerita and current Chair of the UNIEA (and previously Chair of the UNI Faculty Senate).
