Whereas, the Enterprise Risk Management Council has proposed a new After-hours Building Access Policy;

and, whereas senators have received many comments from faculty members indicating their concerns about this proposal;

and, whereas, the final date for comments on the policy proposal is March 29.

Action: 

Therefore, be it resolved that, at its March 25, 2013 meeting,  the Senate receive Senator MacLin's report summarizing comments on the policy proposal and approve Senator MacLin's recommendations to the policy proposal and forward its recommendations to Jan Hanish, the chair of the Enterprise Risk Management Council.

Recommendation to change drop date to 10 class days after midpoint of semester

Whereas, the current policy for the timing for dropping a  class while receiving a "W" states that it shall be 10 days after the midpoint of the semester;

and, whereas some semesters, this falls over a weekend or over Spring Break, such as in Spring 2013 when it was the Friday of Spring Break

Action: 

Therefore be it resolved that the date to drop a course revised to ten class days after the midpoint of the semester.

Courses dropped after the deadline for dropping with a W (Withdrawn), which is 10 calendar days after the end of the first half of the fall and spring semesters and at the mid-point of half-semester and summer session courses, will be recorded as F (Failed) unless there are unusual circumstances and the student is doing passing work - in which case the instructor, the student's advisor, and the head of the department in which the courses are offered may approve a grade of W.

Regents Awards for Faculty Excellence Recomendations

The Regents Awards for Faculty Excellence Committee has met and come up with its list of recommended recipients for this year's awards. According to the process, those recommendations are to be brought before the Faculty Senate to be discussed and require Senate endorsement before moving forward in the process. In order to maintain confidentiality, the names of recommended candidates should only be revealed to the Senate in closed session. Assuming the Faculty Senate endorses the slate of nominees, then that list proceeds to the Provost for review before being forwarded to the Iowa Board of Regents for final action.

Action: 

Therefore, be it resolved that the Faculty Senate endorses the Regents Teaching Awards Committee's recommended list of recipients for this year's Regents Teaching Awards.

Whereas the Physics program was ordered to restucture last spring, and whereas the program has completed its proposal and that proposal has been approved by the CHAS Senate

Action: 

Therefore be it resolved that, pending approval by the UCC on 2/21, the Senate approve the changes to the Physics program.

NOTE: At its Feb 25, 2013 meeting, the Senate approved the changes to the BS in Physics, the BA in Physics-Teaching and the honors emphasis areas for each undergraduate major. Approval of listing PHYSICS 4080 and PHYSICS 4300 as 5000-level courses were tabled until they could be considered by the GCCC and the Grad Council.

Curriculum changes--Women's & Gender Studies Program

The Women & Gender Studies Program (WGS) was required to restructure last year. Until the program restuctures, it cannot admit new students. The changes to the MA program have been approved by the CSBS and CHAS Senates and will be reviewed by the Grad Council on Jan. 24. Director of WGS, Barbara Cutter, asks that the University Faculty Senate review the program changes as expeditiously as possible.

Action: 

Therefore, be it resolved that, pending approval of the Grad Council, the Senate approve the WGS curriculum changes.
