Priority Registration - Military and Veteran Students

Calendar Item:

Docket Number:

Facts:

1. UNI has clearly made veteran student issues a priority. We are established as a Best for Vets school in the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 and Military Times’ Best for Vets: Business Schools 2016 rankings as well as a Top School in the 2016 MAE&T Guide to Colleges & Universities research study. 2. Many of our student-veterans are currently serving in the National Guard or the Reserves. They have time constraints and commitments that are completely unrelated to the university but impact academics and having the ability to schedule classes as early as possible to avoid time conflicts is a huge benefit. They sometimes even have to attend weekend drills on Fridays. 3. Student-veterans who use GI Bill benefits are limited in the amount of time that they have to use benefits and the types of courses that can be paid for by the GI Bill. Priority Registration gives them the opportunity to ensure maximum benefits in the time frame they’ve been given. 4. A local precedent: There are already certain groups that have this status and are able to register on the first day of registration with their class or “group”. Additionally, certain students registered with Student Disability Services are able to register early. 5. Both the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and multiple colleges and universities throughout the country provide priority registration according to the student classification as junior, senior, etc.

Action:

We would like to offer the same priority registration status to veterans on campus that we currently offer for other groups, including certain students under Student Disability Services. These groups are allowed to register on the day before their class begins to register.

Conituned Services and Recognition

- Allowing this priority registration will further strengthen the University’s status as a Top Military Friendly campus. It also supports our efforts of increasing enrollment and retention of veteran students. - University of Iowa grants priority registration to veterans. It is only for true military service members, or vets. - The protocol is: · They are coded by our GI Bill certifying officials, or admissions team once they provide a copy of their DD 214 or their Certificate of Eligibility (COE) · Fresh, sophomores, juniors= able to register on the 2nd day of registration, starting in the morning (**Registration is open for 14 days) · Voc Rehab (Ch 31)= able to register on 1st day of registration Seniors, Grad and Professional students do not have priority b/c they already get it. - Iowa State provides priority registration according to the student classification as junior, senior, etc. They get to register the first day of registration for their respective classification. *Using veterans to describe all former and current military personnel. This does not include military dependents.
